How To Wake Up Earlier In The Morning?

Recently, many articles are circulating in the internet talking about how morning people get better grades, are more happy, or are more successful. I personally turned into a morning person since July this year, and it was one of the best things that happened to me.

I feel really productive every day. I get to complete a lot of homework and errands before everyone else wakes up. Despite having classes that start only at 11.30 a.m. and 2 p.m., I would wake up at around 6-7 a.m. and get started with my plans for the day. It feels good as by the time I get tired from my classes, I am already done with things I want or needed to do.


1. Have a motivation to wake up early

If you are reading this post, you must be interested in waking up earlier. Turn this interest into a goal, make it something you want to achieve, and be motivated to do so.

My motivation to wake up early is the peaceful and serene air in the morning. I like it when I wake up when the sun is just out, and seeing the sky brightens as I have my breakfast. I look forward to my “me” time in the morning. One suggestion for your motivation to wake up earlier is to think of the successful people who wake up really early. Look at their success, and be motivated to be as productive as them to achieve more. I am sure you want to be just like them right?

2. Plan your morning ahead before you go to bed, and sleep early

“I want to wake up early but it is so hard because I always end up sleeping late every day!” – I get this from my friends so often.

If you are staying up late browsing through your Facebook timeline or reading unnecessary articles, then you are doing it wrong. I don’t know about you, but many times I try to work on my homework at night when I am already tired, I get distracted easily and end up being unproductive. So I turned this unproductive time into sleeping time instead. Instead of forcing myself to stay up late and be less efficient, I plan on things that I want to work on in the morning, and go to bed early.

Remember, if you sleep early, you still get 6-8 hours of sleep every day. In fact, you will realize that a sleep-early-and-wake-up-early habit will help you get more sufficient sleep.


3. Do not set multiple alarms, and never use your snooze button

Set only one alarm before you go to bed. When you have multiple alarms, you tend to assume that you will wake up when the next alarm rings, but it never happens. The same thing applies to your snooze button. Think of your motivation and plans of the day when your alarm rings, let that force leads you to open your eyes and sit up on your bed.

If you are not confident in terms of your ability to hear the alarm, put your clock or phone somewhere faraway from your bed. Make yourself leave the bed to turn it off.


4. Turn your heater on or turn your air conditioner off in the morning

It is especially hard to wake up in the morning when it is so cold and you are in the comfort of your warm and cozy blanket. I get it, I really do. What I did to solve this problem, is to set an alarm 20 minutes before the time I want to wake up, just to turn on my heated blanket. I would get back to my bed and lie for another 20 minutes before waking up when my alarm really rings.

You are lucky if you can set timer on your automated heater or air conditioner – I am jealous.

 

5. If you are a morning-fitness person, go work out

I am not, but I read that exercising in the morning is more effective if you want to lose weight. This is because morning exercise helps regulate your circadian rhythm (internal body clock) better for a better-quality sleep, and a good sleep helps control the hormonal balance that helps control your appetite.  Besides that, it is easier to exercise in the morning before everything else gets in your way. You don’t need to squeeze time to head to the gym, or ending up not going at all because you get too busy.

However, if you are like me, who doesn’t want to work out in the morning because I don’t want to shower in the morning (my hair takes a while to tame after washing) – skip to the next step!


6. Make yourself a good breakfast

After freshening up myself, I would turn on a nice morning playlist on Spotify or 8tracks, and start my breakfast preparing session. I don’t  mind putting more effort into making a good breakfast because a) it’s good for my health; and b) it warms me up. Sometimes I would make myself a good toast, sometimes an omelette. Lately I am into a clean eating habit, so I have been having plain oatmeal with fruits and scrambled egg whites.

Dancing around the kitchen and singing really pumps your heartbeat up!


7. Enjoy an hour of relaxation and enjoyment

Ah, this is my favourite part of the day! I love to set aside about 30-45 minutes in the morning to go through my Facebook or Instagram feed, read a nice article, or watch the latest Ellen show on YouTube when I have my breakfast. My family’s Whatsapp group chat is a nice place to linger too. It has been really entertaining seeing what my nieces has to comment on my mother’s texts; my mum also gets very excited every time I wake up early to chat with them. #LDRfamilyproblems

Social network is generally quieter in the morning, which means you get less distracted by friends’ posts or texts. That way, it is easier for you to click on the close tab whenever you need to.


8. Start your day and be productive

After your breakfast or relaxation time, turn off everything that will be distracting and work on what you wanted to do. I like to start by going through my checklist and pick on my priority of the day. Start with the hardest thing or the thing that requires the most effort. That way, you can get that tough job out of your way for the rest of your day.
